Tension Structures

Bringing an idea to life

The team at ERD Structural Engineering Inc. has extensive experience designing tension systems in support of glass walls and roof structures. We are able to create tension system designs for any kind of building element, and we thrive when given creative ideas and unconventional design tasks.

Our previous projects have involved impactful collaborations and have produced some of the most unique tension structures built in British Columbia and Alberta. We look forward to working with creative clients, and partnering with companies to design one of a kind projects, and bring ideas to life.

Sparkling Hill Atrium Tension System

The Sparkling Hill Atrium project featured the installment of a cable-suspended, three-storey crystal-shaped glass atrium, located in the Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon, British Columbia. This project represents the first structure of its kind in Canada. Architectural design services were provided by CannonDesign, and structural design of the steel frame was carried out by Read Jones Christoffersen. The crystal structure is more than 17 m high, and the applied tension system consists of 27 compression struts and 153 pre-tensioned spiral strands. The glass wall cable tension system was designed by ERD Structural Engineering Inc. (Erdevicki Structural Engineering). Stella Custom Glass Hardware Inc. collaborated with CannonDesign on the glass crystal design, and provided all glass hardware elements for the project. This project was completed in 2010.

Kaye Edmonton Clinic Atrium Wall Tension Structure

The Kaye Edmonton Clinic atrium wall is an eight storey double-glazed wall tension structure, located in Edmonton, Alberta. This atrium wall is 37 m high, and has a 60 m arc length. The Kaye Edmonton Clinic atrium wall is currently the largest bow truss structure in Canada.

The architectural and structural design of the Kaye Edmonton Clinic building was completed by Dialog. Dialog also completed the preliminary and concept design of the atrium tension system. ERD Structural Engineering Inc. (Erdevicki Structural Engineering) provided detailed structural design for the glass curtain wall tension system. Stella Custom Glass Hardware Inc. collaborated with Dialog on the glass wall design, and provided glass hardware elements for the project. This project was completed in 2012.
